Toddy Time

hot toddy

Cold and flu season got you down? Sure, the OTC stuff can relieve some of your misery, but grabbing some common ingredients and making a Hot Toddy can also clear your congestion, and the hefty shot of booze just makes you feel all warm and cozy inside.

When my husband was sidelined with a cold over the holiday season, I made one for him every evening (and though I didn't suffer from the sniffles, I sipped one myself...they are quite tasty.) Here is my basic recipe:

Kelly's Hot Toddy 1.5 oz. Irish Whiskey, Brandy or Cognac 1 lemon slice 1 orange slice 4 oz. hot brewed tea (we used orange spice, but apple cinnamon or chamomile would be nice too) 2 cloves 1 star anise pod (optional, if you can't find these or don't have them, it still makes a tasty tipple) 1 cinnamon stick Honey, to taste Freshly grated nutmeg

Squeeze the lemon and orange slice, and place in the bottom of the mug. Add your spirit of choice, the star anise and the cloves, and top with the hot brewed tea. Garnish with a cinnamon stick and freshly grated nutmeg. Wrap yourself up in a blanket or Snuggie, and enjoy.
