Dear Kelly,

When we get to the final page on our calendars, the last few weeks just seem to fly by (especially since Thanksgiving was late this year...) Although these are tough times economically, and many of us may be scaling back our holiday spending this year, the most important detais remain. Time spent catching up with cherished family and friends, enjoying a glass or two of wine or a new cocktail creation you've whipped up, is part of the spirit of the holidays (literally and figuratively!) And no matter the beverage--be it Guinness or Gibson--let's raise a toast to those in our lives for whom we have been most grateful this year.

This month's edition of "Kelly's Grape Times" has lots of last minute holiday ideas. There's a sparkling wine cocktail recipe that's bright red, tart and delicious; a cocktail concoction that's perfect for those who like spice (or maple syrup!); and a rundown of a few new bar guides, if you need a last minute gift idea--or if Santa didn't bring you everything you wanted. Finally, you can catch up on my latest articles in Wine Enthusiast, DC Magazine and Cheers.

Happy holidays, and all the best for a healthy and prosperous 2009! Thanks to my faithful readers and loyal customers, and a warm welcome to those of you who have just subscribed!

Cheers--

Kelly

Very cherry for the holidays...and beyond
 Sparkling Cherry Jubilee

Cocktail cherry If you hear "cherry liqueur" and your thoughts immediately turn to cherry brandy or similarly supersweet booze, then you most likely haven't had Cherry Heering. Made in Denmark, Heering has the luscious, mouthwatering flavor of tart cherries, and its gorgeous red hue makes it a perfect option for holiday cocktails.

Recently I did a segment on DC's Channel 9 CBS about sparkling wine cocktails for the holidays, including this little number I whipped up. Try serving it alongside crackers and brie topped with tart cherry preserves:

Sparkling Cherry Jublilee
‡ oz. Cherry Heering Liqueur
1 tsp. fresh lime juice
Cava, Prosecco or other sparkling wine
Cherry and/or lime twist

Add first 2 ingredients to a Champagne flute, top with sparkling wine, garnish with cherry and/or lime twist.

 Kelly's latest articles

I have been busy updating my blog,as well as writing drinks-related articles. You can always see the latest clips on my website, and I also post them on my blog as they come out. Here are some highlights:

Read "Fete the Halls" in Wine Enthusiast for my simple guide to throwing a memorable cocktail party, including wine and food suggestions and cocktail recipes from DC chefs, wine shop owners and mixologists.

Check out "Capital Options" in Cheers magazine for the latest in the exciting cocktail, beer and wine scene in the Washington, DC area.

Salty, savory and smoky are where it's at in the glass right now. Discover a batch of mouthwatering tipples in my DC Magazine article "Posh Spice."

December 5 marked the 75th anniversary of the Repeal of Prohibition. I was at DC's City Tavern Club to celebrate, at the Repeal Day event organized by the DC Craft Bartenders guild. Catch the details here.

 Maple & Spice

Mixologist Owen Thomson of DC's Bourbon shared his recipe for a tasty cold weather cocktail. The great spicy notes come from Allspice Dram, a liqueur made from Jamaican allspice berries--the flavor is a cross between clove and nutmeg. Check alpenz.com for purchasing information in your area:

Maple and Spice Cocktail
Courtesy of Owen Thomson, Bourbon Washington, DC

1.5 oz Pusser's Navy Rum (can substitute Appleton's or Mt. Gay)
‡ oz. Fresh lime juice
‡ oz. Grade B maple syrup
º oz. St. Elizabeth Allspice Dram (see below for purchasing information)

Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice. Shake vigorously, and then strain into a cocktail glass.

**To mix a batch, add all ingredients in desired amounts to a pitcher. To make each cocktail, first stir the pitcher contents to incorporate the syrup, and add approximately 2.5 oz. of the mixture per serving to a shaker half-filled with ice. Shake vigorously, and then strain into cocktail glasses.

Hit the book and then the bottle...
 Cocktail books reviewed

The Essential Cocktail Forget cookbooks...2008 was the year of the cocktail book. Books based on fresh and seasonal ingredients, reprints of classic bar guides, and everything in between, all hit the shelves this year. Here are a few I've enjoyed:

Luscious Liqueurs, by A.J. Rathbun

Rathbun provides easy-to-follow recipes so you can replicate your favorite liqueurs (like Limoncello and Irish Cream), as well as not-so-well-known sippers (like the lemongrass and Thai basil-infused Lebaoku), at home. Since most of the recipes take several weeks to infuse and steep, these concoctions aren't for the impatient! But if you have always wanted to dabble in infusing spirits, this is a great reference.

The Essential Cocktail, by Dale DeGroff

The inclusion of both classic and modern recipes from the undisputed Master Mixologist deems this the perfect choice for an indispensable go-to bar guide. Fascinating anecdotes and history behind drinks and drink makers allows for great cocktail party conversation fodder.

Artisanal Cocktails, by Scott Beattie

Fresh, well-crafted cocktails based on seasonal ingredients offer inspiration for the home mixologist, and full color photographs show the beauty of an expertly made drink. However, note that some techniques may be too involved or time-consuming for the casual bartender.
