Dear Magyarics,

Summer is in full swing, and the lazy, hazy days are upon us...

This month's newsletter travels to Italy's Piedmont region where the locals make Dolcetto--a terrific red on the light side that is just perfect for the summer months.

We also take a look at some food and wine pairing tips for popular summer dishes, from steamed lobster to grilled pineapple slices. Mmmmm...fire up the grill and set the patio table!

And, you can read up on some of Kelly's latest food and wine related articles, and get registration information for her August appearance on Divas Uncorked "Sisters Who Sip" series, where Kelly will be discussing wines for grilled foods.

So sit back, relax, and enjoy this month's edition of Kelly's Grape Times.

 The Heat is On
 Try Italy's Dolcetto

wine bottles Italy has often been referred to as one big vineyard-- grapes are planted pretty much everywhere. While the country makes delicious, crisp whites like Pinot Grigio, Frascati and Orvieto, Italians will often be the first to admit that it's the country's reds that really shine. They possess the flavors--and often the acidity--that pair so well with Italian cuisine, including the ubiquitous tomato, so prevalent in the country's dishes.

If you are a neophite when it comes to Italian wine, and you want to venture beyond Pinot Grigio and Chianti, a good place to start, especially for summer, is with a light red like Dolcetto, and a terrific bottle to try is S Orsola Dolcetto d'Alba 2005. It has nice cherry and plum flavors, but it isn't over the top fruity by any means. It has soft tannins and medium acidity, making it an all- around easy-drinking selection. And, at around $9 a bottle, this Dolcetto is a super choice for a house red this summer.

Dolcetto is made in Italy's Piedmont region with the grape of the same name. It is sometimes compared to a French Beaujolais, and, like Beaujolais, slight chilling won't mask the flavors and can actually enhance enjoyment of the wine. So it works well during the hot days of July and August if you really want a red wine but don't think you can handle one that's too big and bold.

Food and Wine Pairing Tips for Summer
 Lobster, Salmon, Mango and More!

food and wine One of the most fun and satisfying things for a wine lover is finding that perfect wine and food pairing. Here are some to try this summer:

  • Grilled pineapple or mango slices topped with vanilla ice cream and toasted pecans are simply divine with a glass of late harvest Viognier.
  • A soft and fruity Pinot Noir from Oregon is a classic match for grilled cedar-planked wild salmon (wild salmon is more flavorful, and better for your health, than the farm-raised variety).
  • Steamed lobster with drawn butter and a buttery Australian or California Chardonnay are a decadent match.
  • The lemony notes and refreshing bubbles in Italian Prosecco are just the thing for steamed clams or oysters on the half shell.
  • Reds from Spain's Priorat region are a nice option for grilled ribeye steak.
  • Barbequed bone-in chicken thighs (which have WAY more flavor than boneless chicken breasts...) are great served with a chilled refreshing rose from Spain or Provence.
  • Lime-flavored tortilla chips with tomato salsa is even more mouth-watering when served with a crisp, citrusy Sauvignon Blanc.
