Summer is here! Time for enjoying lazy days at the pool, evenings on the deck or patio, and weekends on the beach or the boat.

There is no better time than summer to enjoy some great wine. Whether it's a fruity rose from Spain to take on a picnic, a spicy Argentinean Malbec to pair with a rib eye steak on the grill, or a French Muscadet for a clambake, summer, food and wine go together perfectly! Read on for wine info, suggestions, and food pairing tips for warmer weather.

And, when you are ready to book your own special wine tasting event or class, email us at trywine@gmail.com, or visit our website. A private wine tasting with us is the perfect option for a unique wedding shower, bachelorette party or engagement party--summer is, after all, wedding season.  Wines for Summer
 Bottles to Keep on Hand

wine bottles Wondering what to drink this summer? Here are some wine suggestions for warmer weather, along with food pairing tips:

Dry RosÈ: Can't decide between a bottle of red or white? Think pink! Real rosÈs have the acidity of a crisp white wine, as well as some of the body and complexity of a red. Aromas and flavors of strawberries and raspberries make them great picnic wines. When shopping for rosÈs, look for the most recent vintage you can find, so the fruit will be bright and fresh instead of tired. Look for: Pink Knot McLaren Vale RosÈ (Australia); 1+1=3 (Spain). Food pairings: Ham and brie on a baguette; soft cheeses; grilled pork tenderloin or salmon.

Muscadet: Planning a clambake this summer? Don't forget the Muscadet. This wine hails from France's Loire Valley, and its overtones of herbs and minerals make it the perfect accompaniment to the local specialty: oysters. (If the label says "sur Lie", it was aged "on the lees"-the dead yeast cells leftover from fermentation. This adds body and complexity.) Look for: Domaine Sauvion; Chateau le Jauney; Domaine de l'Ecu. Food pairings: all kinds of shellfish (clams, oysters, lobster, shrimp).

New Zealand Unoaked Chardonnay: If you tend to shy away from Chardonnays because you don't care for the wood, coconut or vanilla flavors resulting from oak overload, then look to the Southern Hemisphere for some alternatives! Wines labeled "unoaked" have been fermented in stainless steel rather than oak barrels, or with oak chips or staves. The resulting wine has fresh fruit flavors and pairs really well with all kinds of food. Look for: Kim Crawford Unoaked Chardonnay; Babich Lone Tree Unoaked Chardonny. Food pairings: Lobster with drawn butter; grilled chicken Caesar salad.

Argentinean Malbec: Spicy, bold and peppery, this big red is just the thing for a big piece of red meat on the grill. A great alternative to Shiraz or Cabernet, Malbec is traditionally a Bordeaux grape, but it's the flagship wine of Argentina, and there are a lot of great producers to be found on the wine shelf. Look for: Trapich; Bodegas Terrazas de los Andes. Food pairings: grilled rib eye; grilled lamb chops; barbecued baby back ribs.

 Refreshing Summer Wine Cocktail
 Compliments of Portugal!

champagne glass Vinho Verde literally means "Green Wine" in Portuguese. It's young, fruity, and slightly fizzy from the addition of CO2., and its low alcohol content makes it a great choice for hot summer days or evenings. And the best part is that you can get Vinho Verde for a whopping $4-$6 per bottle. (Check Trader Joe's, and look for the long, slender green bottle.)

For a refreshing drink this summer, fill a Champagne flute halfway with chilled Vinho Verde, then top with lemonade, limeade or tropical fruit nectar like mango or passionfruit. You can even add an ice cube or two to keep it cold and refreshing. Cheers! :-)

Father's Day Gift Ideas for the Wine Lover
 Dad will LOVE these...

Looking for the perfect gift for your Dad this Father's Day? Well, if he is a wine lover, you are in luck. Here are some ideas that are sure to please:

  • "The Joy of Drinking" by Barbara Holland: This book all about imbibing is written in an easy, breezy style, with some fascinating history on the subject of drinking, along with a healthy dose of wit and humor. It's a fun read for Dad to enjoy while sitting in a hammock under a shady tree with his favorite beverage...
  • Barbecue wine: Dads just love meat on the grill. Select some big, bold Shiraz, Barolo or Zinfandel to pair with his favorite grilled creation. Stick the bottle in the fridge for 15 minutes before serving to take away the alcohol "burn" that can sometimes accompany these big wines.
  • VacuVin Wine Chiller Sleeves: Keeping that bottle of white wine cool this summer while enjoying dinner on the deck can be a challenge. So get Dad a few of these ingenious tools. Keep them in the freezer, and he can slip one around a bottle of wine to either chill it, or keep it cool.
